VersaEmerge – 6 Questions With Blake

July 23, 2009

Interview By: Victoria H.
(Urban/Pop Editor)

CWG: What inspired the name VersaEmerge?

BLAKE: Versa means “the opposite” or “to change.” So the name means to change and emerge.

CWG: You’re currently on the Van’s Warped Tour. Tell us your best road story.

BLAKE: I actually got a formal marriage proposal from a fan today. That was pretty crazy!

CWG: We’re impressed by your humble beginnings and teenage dedication to your craft; do you feel you might have missed out on anything that other teenagers get to do? What did you learn about yourselves during the process of creating VersaEmerge?

BLAKE: It was more of a choice not to do what normal teenagers do. We were always working hard to benefit the and and practicing rather than partying and such. Nothing pays better than hard work.
CWG: You said that you think you are closer to finding the band’s sound, what process did the band go through to find the sound that best defines you?

BLAKE: I feel that as we put out more and more music, each is a stepping stone to ultimately achieve what we strive for your band to sound like. Time is progress.

CWG: What did you learn while recording your EP that you are going to bring to recording your LP?

BLAKE: Never settle on taking shortcuts just because it’s easier. We’ve learned to take every opportunity to make the cd ours.

CWG: Where do you see the band a year from now? Five years from now?

BLAKE: Hopefully a year from now we will be on a great tour with a great album having the time of our lives! There’s no telling where we will be five years from now… We can only set goals and try to make them!

The six songs on Floridian alt-rock band VersaEmerge’s EP are quick and dirty, but nonetheless awesome.

The EP opens with a 39-second instrumental entitled “Theatrics.” This song is likely to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck and should be used in every suspense movie filmed from here on out.

This is followed by “The Hider.” The speed makes the lyrics a little hard to understand but this only makes the song universal enough to be enjoyed in a good or bad mood. VersaEmerge really knows how to rock the high pitches, but stay away if you’ve got a headache brewing!

“Past Praying For” comes next. This is what Avril Lavigne should have aimed for, an excellent juxtaposition of sweet-voiced vocals and eardrum-bursting electric guitar. Track 4 is titled “Moments Between Sleep” and is easily the most successful song on the EP. The lyrics have an easy and definite rhythm to them which would make them a great poem if simply read aloud. The vocals are really spectacular here. They are pushed further than on the other songs to a clear, bell-like sound. Check out the song at :55 to hear the vocals at their best.

The last two tracks “Whisperer” and “Clocks” feature both male and female vocals as opposed to the previously all-female vocals. These give the songs a universal relatability. The vocals of “Whisperer” have a Broadway, theatrical feel to them and “Clocks” has a really beautiful, sweet sound unknown to the other songs. With these vocals “Clocks” pairs soft guitar and chimes to give a peaceful feel to the final song.

VersaEmerge will be performing on this summer’s entire Warped Tour in support of their self-titled EP. Do yourself a favor and check them out! Please let me know if you’d be interested in setting something up.

Cinematic pop rock artist VersaEmerge is setting the stage to become the breakout band that everyone will be talking about. The female-fronted band was recently featured as one of the 100 bands you need to know in Alternative Press magazine. Their self-titled EP was released on Fueled By Ramen and produced by James Paul Wisner (New Found Glory, Underoath). They have been touring nonstop and getting their music out to people on a larger scale than ever before.

They have toured with Chiodos’ Craig Owens, We The Kinds, There For Tomorrow, The Maine and The Cab.
