iTunes and Billboard chart topping group Rebelution announces their headlining Winter 2010 tour alongside acclaimed reggae artist SOJA and critically acclaimed hip-hop legends ZION-I. Continuing with their constant touring schedule, which saw them play over 70 shows and a dozen festivals this year, with their most recent trek across the country selling out many venues including markets in which the band had never previously performed.
Based in Santa Barbara, Rebelution will be headlining 39 performances nationwide throughout January, February, and March 2010. Venues will be in the one thousand to two thousand capacity range, 19 of them House of Blues main rooms. The band has rapidly grown into one of the most notable reggae artists in the music industry today, after the release of their sophomore album “Bright Side of Life” dominated the iTunes charts in August 2009, capturing the #3 spot for top albums downloaded in the United States in all genres, and the #1 spot in the reggae music genre. Rebelution went on to garner the #54 spot on the Billboard Top 200, #7 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums charts and #1 on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums charts.
Rebelution recently finished a 52 city tour across the United States, playing sold out shows at venues such as The Fillmore in San Francisco, The House of Blues in West Hollywood, HOB Anaheim, HOB San Diego, Paradise Rock in Boston, The Note in Westchester, Neumos in Seattle, The Social in Orlando, Fox Theatre in Boulder, Norva in Norfolk and Music Farm in Charleston to name a few. They have shared the stage with artists such as The Offspring, 311, Slightly Stoopid, Willie Nelson, Damian Marley, Bob Dylan, and Ludacris.
Touring with Rebelution is Washington D.C.’s SOJA who released their third full-length album “Born in Babylon” in August 2009. The album debuted at #1 on the iTunes reggae charts, and #3 on Billboard’s Top Reggae Album charts. The band is known as a road warrior, averaging 150 shows a year visiting every major city in the United States, and playing internationally for crowds of up to 16,000 people. They have shared the stage with notable artists such as Citizen Cope, Matisyahu, Ben Harper, Slightly Stoopid, Damian Marley, Govt Mule, Umphrees McGee, and Steel Pulse.
Also touring with Rebelution is Oakland based, hip-hop legends ZION-I. The duo consists of producer and DJ AmpLive and emcee Zumbi. They are best known for their futuristic production techniques, using a mix of live instrumentation and samples, and their poetic, positive, and socially conscious lyrics.

Big Lovin Panda Dose Out the Tunes at Club Good Hurt’s “Medicinal Mondays”
After funk pop-rock band Big Lovin’ Panda’s November 23rd show at Culver City’s Club Good Hurt, front man Alex Schneiderman remarked that it wasn’t one of their best performances, but I never would have guessed that the band’s impressive set was actually an off night for them.
So far this year, the Los Angeles band has enjoyed residencies at the Good Hurt for “Medicinal Mondays,” featuring Emilee Wilson’s Vertigirls, a non-stripping pole dancer troupe, and at the Unknown Theater in Hollywood, which will host the band’s release show on December 12th for their upcoming seven song EP, “Trinkets.”
The group started between guitarist Tony Ferrara and bassist Tal Weinman. Their name is the result of a misheard “otherwise unpronounceable intimate gesture” described by Tal to Tony over loud speakers at a concert. (When Tal clarified that “Big Lovin Panda” was not what he had said, Tony responded, “Either way, I want you to go home and do the big lovin panda, and report back to me tomorrow. “) Alex, who pays the bills by working as an audio engineer at The Roxy Theatre, was added to the mix in 2008. In 2009, Tony’s college buddy from USC, Sean Whalen was recruited on drums.
Big Lovin Panda is completely self-promoted and distributed, and Alex, says they want to keep it that way. On the band’s reverbnation.com page, they describe their sound as “Disco blasting out of the rolled down windows of a hearse raised on monster truck wheels, with just married cans clanging melodically behind.”
While songs on the band’s MySpace playlist, such as “Change of Pace” don’t especially standout over computer speakers, their live songs sound like what radio should be playing. Tal’s funky bass lines make for groove-tastic music, accompanied by Alex’s vocals, which are sort of Brandon Boyd-esque when he’s not occasionally screaming.
Thus far, all of their material has been dispensed online. As I alluded to before, the songs available now do not do justice to Big Lovin Panda’s talent. Luckily, the sound on recent mixes of “Trinkets” pops much more than the compressed MySpace tracks.
Aside from being musically in tune with each other, the sharply dressed band was also stylistically in synch. Later that night, drummer Sean Whalen joked that the band’s two month business plan was to buy boots with funds earned from the EP, when photographer Karen Curley noted how well coordinated the band was.
Between songs, Alex held pole dancer roll call, as he announced each dancer’s arrival to the stage (“It’s Tiffany Time!”). Though Big Lovin’ Panda are fun to watch onstage, I have to admit it was sometimes difficult to keep my eyes on the band, with lingerie clad women performing incredible gymnastic feats in three-to-six inch platform heels off to the side.
The band will hit the road next spring, starting on the West Coast, and hopefully ending in Austin, Texas, where the band wish to play South by Southwest. Though the band is still waiting to hear if they are accepted, Texas native Sean says they may show up for the festivities, even if they aren’t formally invited.
Doug “Cosmo” Clifford and Stu Cook of the legendary American musical group Creedence Clearwater Revival are pleased to be a part of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s charity CD Hope For The Holidays – Rockin’ Christmas for a Cure. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rhythm section (drums and bass respectively) with their latest project Creedence Clearwater Revisited contributed a version of the Christmas classic “Run Rudolph Run” for inclusion on the compilation CD which serves to benefit the JDRF. The 27 track collection also includes holiday recordings from Weezer, Collective Soul, The Beach Boys, Jon Anderson of Yes, and others. “Run Rudolph Run,” written by Johnny Marks and Marvin Brodie, was first recorded by Chuck Berry in 1958. Creedence Clearwater Revisited’s fresh take on “Run Rudolph Run” is one that gives the holidays a rousing, classic rock, swampy flair. The track can be heard in its entirety here.

Featured currently on playlist and podcast #38 is the ubiquitous indie darlings Band of Skulls, The Fray and Jack Johnson’s love child, Jack Savoretti, and my new favorites, Elle Macho. Elle Macho is a trio based out of Nashville, and is a powerful blend of agro-sexiness. They take Concrete Blond’s sound and twist it into a minor, angsty key, overlaid by a powerhouse female vocal that evokes mullet-era Joan Jett without all that unnecessary rasp and bravado.
Other favorites were Lord T and Eloise’s Black Limousine. This independent hip hop act is a refreshing newcomer to the scene – they put the emphasis back on the show, so if you ever get a chance to see them in concert, go! Amazing Baby is also featured, with their sparkling sonic void filled with reverb and wailing guitars. Jesse Woods’ It Girl is a song reminiscent of a live Jeff Buckley, and is the reason Bands Under the Radar exists – I would have never known about Jesse Woods had I not checked out the playlist.
All told, this first installment of playlist #38 is a great mix – as if your coolest friend made you a mix tape. Bands Under the Radar is a great way to scan for new music without having to search for it yourself. Each artist is listed with the names of their songs and links to their website, Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter pages so you can become their instant biggest fan after just one listen – and you’ll become the new biggest fan of handful of bands featured. I might even start the new Elle Macho fanclub, after just one listen!
MxPx, the notorious punk rockers out of the great Northwest are digitally releasing a 14-track Christmas album titled Punk Rawk Christmas through their label, Rock City Recording Company on December 1. This special holiday offering has been over 10 years in the making; one punk-carol classic released each year (sometimes two) to their PxPx Fan Club for over a decade has now been packaged along with one new original track, “Punk Rawk Christmas” and the soon-to-be-classic punk cover of “Auld Lang Syne.”
This year marks the band’s 17-year anniversary and in celebration they have already released an album of covers, On The Cover II in addition to an EP, Left Coast Punk, their first original release in more than two years. Lead singer/bassist Mike Herrera explains the bands decision on now adding in a full-length Christmas album, “This year there was just enough songs to make for a nice, robust holiday album. Any more would be too much, any less would be…well, you get the idea.” Longtime fan favorites such as “Christmas Day,” “You’re The One I Miss” and “It’s Christmas and I’m Sick” are wrapped up alongside the previously unreleased “Punk Rawk Christmas”. About the title track, Herrera says, “I was sitting at the studio writing and thinking of how bad the economy was. Then I came up with the idea of Christmas itself being broke and ‘on a budget’ hence, Punk Rawk Christmas was born.” Adding to the Christmas list of hits, MxPx has added their version of, “Auld Lang Syne”, because, “we wanted to do at least one cover, but didn’t want it to be too weird and cheesy. ALS seemed perfect. It was fun and we did it in one afternoon; what I call the punk rock 101-style of recording.”
As a bonus, MxPx will be releasing a RED version of the album available only through Amazon on Demand, which features a physical copy of all 14 tracks, but alternative artwork from the version sold on the bands website. The RED version will be available on December 1. Also available on the same day the band will be releasing a collector’s dream, a limited edition marble-colored 7” vinyl featuring the bands first Christmas track ever written, “Christmas Day” and their most recent track, “Punk Rawk Christmas” in their original form on side A, and acoustic versions on side B. Senate Republicans, wary of being seen as the party that blocked health care reform, today unveiled an 11th hour health care reform plan that guarantees insurance for every American citizen. “Unlike the Democratic versions which will insure only about 95% of all Americans, our bill will insure 100% of Americans,” said House Minority Leader John Boehner. The bill accomplishes this by defining an American as any citizen who has health care insurance.
“By purifying our definition of American,” said Boehner, “We will ensure that the poor, the lazy, the sickly, and illegal immigrants, including those who are legal, will not be entitled to any benefits. This will motivate those who want to become the New Americans to get a job, get strong, make enough money to buy insurance, or go back where they came from, and it will make our country even stronger for the generations yet to come.”
Senate Republicans, worried about being associated with any kind of health care reform, originally expressed hesitation about supporting the bill, but Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell was finally persuaded to go along after fellow Republicans agreed to attach a rider changing his title to Senate Alternative Leader.
“I’ve never been comfortable being associated with the term minority,” said McConnell.
The compromise was devised by Senator Joseph Lieberman (?-CT), who said, “This bipartisan effort shows that unctuous sanctimonious statesmen can work together for the good of each other, regardless of party affiliation.”
Following the legacies of androgynous icons such as Annie Lennox and David Bowie, La Roux’s new CD invokes the good part of the 80’s. It also invokes the good part of dance music that sometimes seems forgotten. Less pathetic and beat reliant yet more invigorating. Like Lady Gaga, La Roux’s videos are not necessary to the music but are key in the message, visionary yet simple. Singer Elly Jackson’s face is unmistakable and so is her voice. Meaningful with a power that never wanes, one similar to that of New Zealand native Ladyhawke or electro pop sensation Little Boots. A sometimes monotonous yet beautiful high-pitched glory that I am completely smitten with.
Singer Eleanor Jackson and her song writing partner and co-producer Ben Langmaid make up the band. Influenced by 80’s bands like Yazoo and Heaven 17, they are vintage electronic candy to my happily melting ears. Jackson and Langmaid first encountered one and another several years back, in 2006. Their first single as La Roux, “Quicksand,” came out in late 2007. “In For The Kill,” their second single, has done quite well on the UK charts. As is expected, England is quite a few steps ahead of us when it comes to music. La Roux only just started catching on in a major way recently with the appearance of their video for “Bulletproof” on MTV.
La Roux, meaning “red-haired one” in French, are signed to Polydor Records, the same label as Klaxons and Kate Nash. Polydor also acts as the UK label for distribution of music by a wide variety of bands such as Weezer, Lady Gaga, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and even the Jonas Brothers. Before they released their debut on Polydor, the duo called themselves “Automan,” writing mostly acoustic tunes. From reading interviews I can do more than speculate that Elly Jackson is not a follower and has strong opinions. And I don’t mean she’s a bitch. Just not the shy nervous wallflower you might imagine from looking at her. She seems critical of herself and as a result, of others as well.
Angular and pasty with fiery red Tilda Swinton hair, Elly Jackson is not only musically talented but has all the attributes of a potential icon. She is strange and fashionable and boyish. The band’s songs are lyrically simplistic but also rather ingenious in that “I wish I’d though of that” type of way. I can’t really respect anyone who doesn’t take great care in all aspects of their craft. This is a band who takes great care, and it shines though invigoratingly through each song.
Almost every song from their self-titled debut CD is worthy of your Itunes music collection. But then again this music isn’t for everyone. Their sound is very reliant on beats and could only be described as electronic pop music. Don’t sour your face at the word “pop” though, that word may have some negative history but you have to remember the spirit. Their song “Tigerlily” starts with a booming Jackson spouting angrily and then calming her voice gently on the chorus. Something she does amazingly well, I might add. An expected formula with some unknown tweak of brilliance.
Jackson Croons “I don’t like the taste of your morality,” mid song. Well, I don’t like the morality of bands like La Roux not getting more recognition. Put your crappy Adam Lambert CD down and pick up this gem. With an even selection of thought provoking ballads like “Colourless Colour” and “I’m Not Your Toy” and loud brain drilling hits like the previously mentioned “Tigerlily” and “In For The Kill.” La Roux’s synth-happy CD will have you humming their tunes by the end of the day. The best two-piece band to enter your ear canal since you first heard The Kills, La Roux will rattle your listening device right off it’s platform or tightly gripped hand.
